CHROME ROD PROTECTION EXPLAINED

Chrome-plated rod and bar products normally contain from 0.0005” maximum to 0.001” minimum hard chrome plate depending upon product specifications.

This hard chrome coating is applied primarily for wear resistance though it does provide considerable corrosion resistance as well.

Hard chrome plate deposits with a “micro-cracked” structure. Although hard chrome plate cannot corrode, the metal substrate it adheres to can if moisture and oxygen penetrate the chrome layer.

The result is a blistering and flaking of the chrome plate deposit from the metal substrate.

Once the rod is assembled into a cylinder and put into service, the fluid film on the surface of the rod provides additional corrosion resistance which is normally sufficient to protect it during its entire life.
